The company Marshalltown was created by the Williams brothers, Jesse and Lester Williams. They started in business by opening a small shop that repaired bicycles and automobiles, they also made tools for local contractors. One day a local plasterer asked if they could customize some of his tools, word started to spread about the brothers craftsmanship and their orders started to grow and they decided to introduce their trowels to the market place.
Very quickly their business grew and they were receiving orders across most states within America and quickly became a known brand for contractors tools, at this point the brothers decided to concentrate on being a manufacturer.
As the Marshalltown brand grew, the brothers decided to travel selling their goods from a truck in the hope to expand the business and to spread the word. They invested into new buildings and machinery to improve the quality and efficiency of their products.
Marshalltown become well-known for their tools and trowels across the whole of the US and Canada. When the first world war started, Marshalltown contributed 18,000 trowels to the US army (1918), after the war the workmen kept their Marshalltown trowels as they returned home, some of which were from Europe and this assisted the international growth of the Marshalltown Brand across the ocean.
